Always Pack Snacks. Always.

Natalie Gilbert

Hangry (ajd.): The state of being so hungry that it has become infuriating. A hybrid of hungry and angry.
Also see: psycho, rabid beast, Godzilla.

This week, Morgan, Kyle and I swept the FLO' - or campus if you will - with flyers...lots and lots of flyers.

11a.m. - 1 p.m. 800 copies of everyone's informative favorite "This Week in Husky Athletics" and 500 copies of "Dawg Pack Appreciation" half sheets were distributed to all deemed worthy.

1p.m. - 2p.m. Sarah and Sam-Dawg tried to follow up with similar methods, taking over the later shift, but unfortunately they were not able to compete at par. Get on our level! Err...I mean...we're a team...I promise!

We were caught off guard by the strange emotion students had during the 12:20-12:30p.m. passing period. We wer turned down a shocking 50% more than usual, with the occasional "I'm going to rip that flyer from your hands and stuff it in yo' face!" glare. Hmmmmm...

Can we make a version of this with Hangry Huskies, please?

A suggestion for future: 12:20-12:30p.m. passing periods we will be passing out granola bars for all of the those Hangry, Hangry Huskies!

Romar loves the Dawg Pack

Head Men's Basketball Coach Lorenzo Romar is the Godfather of the Dawg Pack. Their lead Dawg. Heck, he STARTED the Dawg Pack. So it's only natural that we would do some awesome work surrounded the Dawg Pack at Men's Hoops last night vs. Oregon.

The Husky Street Team hit campus hard with special flyers, social media team went to town on Facebook and Twitter to promote a $5 concession voucher and a FREE t-shirt for the first 50 Dawg Pack members to turn up. In addition to the "Dawg Pack Fan of the Game" at every home MBB game, during this special night Husky Hoops gave the Dawg Pack in-game shout outs on the videoboard from players and Romar himself thanking the Dawg Pack.

MKT 460 - Dawg Pack & Thriftshop

Erin Allett

Pacaar Hall, home of UW Foster School of Business..and my new favorite MKT 460 course

This morning's bright-and-early lecture and discussion at Pacaar Hall for MKT 460 could not have gone better! It was somewhat relieving and refreshing to be able to share with our target student audience the challenges we face with student attendance.

Though only half of the course will be conducting research on Dawg Pack behavior and mindset on behalf of our department, the entire class was engaged, honest, thoughtful, and ready to immerse themselves in this project. As the client, I laid out our struggles and what questions we want to shed some light on - particularly with Men's Basketball. The student groups - 4 groups of 5 students - will identify their research questions and will devise this survey and focus group material on a topic that so many prominent athletic departments across the country are confused by - declining student attendance and engagement at events.

To have a working knowledge of our Men's Basketball game day experience (this is where we have seen the steepest decline - MBB Dawg Pack tickets are down 22% from 2012-13) all 40 students will be sitting in the Dawg Pack section during two Men's Basketball games on Wednesday, Jan. 12 vs. Stanford and Saturday, Jan. 15 vs. Cal.

Below is an outline I used to lead discussion and to lay out our dilemma. While this document organized my thoughts, I did not share it with the students, as the instructor and I both wanted them to see the direction they take the project. I look forward to attending their presentation later this quarter on Monday, Mar. 10 as this data has the great potential to provide insight into the mindsets and behaviors of UW students and the Dawg Pack and how we can meet the Dawg Pack where they are at.

Gymnastics DPA

Erin Allett

1/2 page ad in The Daily

Monday night was a great night for both the Dawg Pack and Husky Gymnastics as they took on Minnesota at 7p.m on Dawg Pack Appreciation Night. The Dawg Pack has been in the crosshairs of Gymnastics staff's radar (in a good way of course) all season and we pulled out the stops to get them there!

Great collaboration with Ben Fox and his New Media team.

Husky Street Team was relentless in their pursuit of golf carting and Greek chapter dinner perfect on campus this week - they are hella strategic with the time and day of the week that they plan these things now. It's sort of terrifying...awesome...but terrifying. They promoted the $5 concession coupon and t-shirt for the first 50 students, free pom poms, and an iPad raffle for Dawg Pack-only (because that's how we roll). Also, all MBB & Football Dawg Pack received an email with all of the Dawg Pack Appreciation goodness.

MKT 460 - Show Me The Data!

I was fired up to hear from Marty (Marketing instructor in the Foster School of Business) before the holiday break that she would in fact be teaching MKT 460 - Research Methods - Winter Quarter.

After exchanging a few idea emails, we sat down today to discuss details of the research project. With so many questions related to the Dawg Pack and student behavior, our conversation only seemed to bring up more ideas and questions that narrowing it down to one area of focus for the 20 students in MKT 460 that would be honing in on Dawg Pack research for an entire quarter.

I will be attending MKT 460 at Pacaar Hall to lecture on Athletics Marketing & Game Day Experience and lead a discussion during class on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 8:30 a.m. about the challenges our department faces in marketing to students and impacting their behavior.

I'm stoked!

This information will be a tremendous resource for us during our 2014-15 Dawg Pack decision-making and will be a great foundation/spring board into diving deeper into UW students thoughts and behaviors about Husky Athletics during subsequent courses.

Meeting First Year Programs Staff

Erin Allett

Had a sweet first time joining the First Year Programs all-staff meeting. We had great discussion and are setting forth with a lot of the follow-ups listed below in my email following our meeting. First up is connecting with Natalie to include an Athletics component to Orientation Leader training and Robert to connect the Husky Street Team with him for Winter and next Fall Dawg Daze!

Email from Erin Allett on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014:

Thank you again for taking the time to include me in your staff meeting yesterday.  I truly enjoyed our initial conversation and the ideas that it sparked.  There is nothing but potential moving forward with a stronger Athletics-FYP partnership and I couldn’t be more excited about your willingness to collaborate!

Incorporating “Husky Athletics awareness” components in orientation leader training appears to be a fantastic, actionable starting point, as these students have a tremendous impact and reach with new students!  I am still digesting some of our ideas and notes from yesterday and will be sharing bits of our discussion with my team in the week ahead.  I am looking forward to continuing to follow-up with each of you in your respective areas.

Director: Grant – I greatly enjoyed hearing your views about the perspectives, misconceptions, and behaviors associated with the divide between Athletics and campus – the proverbial, and literal, “climb.”  While we both know that Rome wasn’t built in a day (apologies I have a tendency to use terrible clichés in emails), I think there is nothing but potential and promise in thinking critically about the underlying reasons and how this group can just begin to raise questions and take some steps forward.  Thank you again for your openness to connecting, swapping ideas, and putting all of our brains together on this!  If you feel it appropriate for you and your team, I would love to have a monthly check-in to continue to keep the gearings turning as to how we can continue make an impact in thoughts and actions as we build a stronger relationship between FYP and Athletics.

Program Manager (Orientation): Natalie – I am looking forward to working with you more on the orientation leader front to see if we can move forward with some of the ideas discussed, ex. a student-athlete/coach panel discussion.  Please reign me in if I get overly excited about helping to add some of these pieces into training – I am well aware that there are a plethora of other aspects that are critical to their training J.  Another idea that came to mind in talking to our Athletics New Media contact is to include social media incorporation with leaders following and liking Husky Athletics social media accounts during training – this is our strongest strategy with awareness of games and the personality of our programs.  Orientation leaders would then pass down this practice to their orientees as one of the first things that new students do when arriving on campus.

Program Manger (Social Media): Martha – Social media-wise, our strategy with Husky Athletics New Media is to create content that increases awareness of events and the personalities of our athletics/teams (well hey, exactly the goals we discussed yesterday!).  If your team is comfortable tapping into our content with RT, likes, follows, etc. I believe that would blend well with our strategy.  Let’s chat more about this, perhaps?

Program Manager (Dawg Daze): Robert – Thank you again for the suggestion of HFS.  It would be great to connect soon to devise a yearly(ish) strategy for Dawg Daze events.  I’m sure there are a ton of pieces TBD, but would love to come up with a snapshot look of ways Athletics can be incorporated and help to enhance some of this programming.  As I mentioned in previous discussions, I oversee our Husky Street Team – a new internship program with the main objective of being foot soldiers in promoting Husky Athletics on campus.  HST will be a great resource and our drivers on any Dawg Daze fronts.  Please let me know any other team members that should be included!

Program Manager (FIGs): Ali – Great ideas with FIGs!  Is there a way that is best to streamline this approach?  I know our department has worked with FIG leaders in one-off type of situations, but want to make sure we are maneuvering through the appropriate channels and making life easy for everyone.

Assistant Director: LeAnne – Thank you again for connecting us with the appropriate contacts to utilize your FYP & Commuter Commons screens for Husky Athletics messaging that is gear specifically to UW students.  I am working with our Manager of Visual Design currently to fine-tune our strategy to best utilize this resource we are branding as “DawgCast.”  Should have an update soon!

Program Support Supervisor Katherine – It was a pleasure meeting you and hearing your ideas about how to incorporate Athletics into FYP throughout the year.  You may be the only safe one that I’m not going to hound with follow-up steps J!  I’m sure we will continue to work together as we move forward and get the ball really rolling!

Have a great rest of your weeks,
